Whatever it is, individual therapy gives you a private, confidential space to explore it properly. Not to be told what to do or how to feel — but to understand yourself more clearly, work through what’s in the way, and find a path forward that actually fits your life.
At Expat Psychologist Amsterdam, our sessions are tailored entirely to you. We work with adults, adolescents, students and couples facing a wide range of challenges — and because our psychologists are expats themselves, you won’t need to spend your sessions explaining the particular complexity of life abroad. We already understand that context. We start from there.

What to expect
The first session This is a conversation, not an assessment. You tell us what’s going on, what you’re hoping for, and what feels most pressing. We listen, ask questions, and together start to build a picture of where you are and where you want to get to. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out before you arrive.
Building understanding In the sessions that follow, we start to identify the patterns, triggers and underlying causes that are keeping you stuck. Understanding why you feel or react the way you do is often the first real turning point.
Developing practical tools Therapy isn’t just insight — it’s also about building concrete skills for managing what life throws at you. You’ll leave sessions with things you can actually use: ways of thinking, responding and taking care of yourself that make a real difference day to day.
Moving forward As the work deepens, most clients notice greater emotional steadiness, more confidence in difficult situations, and a clearer sense of who they are and what they want. Progress isn’t always linear — but it is real.
How we work
All in-person sessions take place in our calm, private offices in Amsterdam, The Hague and Leiden. Online sessions are available worldwide. Sessions are conducted in English, and our approach is integrative — meaning we draw on CBT, EMDR and other evidence-based methods based on what works best for you, not a fixed protocol.
