How the title of Expat Psychologist was born
First of its kind. Still the best. It started with a gap nobody else was filling.
When I first arrived in the Netherlands, a Dutch colleague said something that stopped me in my tracks: “There isn’t a single practice dedicated to expats here. You have the education and the experience — why don’t you start one?”
That idea never left me.
Having lived in multiple countries myself, I knew firsthand what expat life really feels like — the loneliness of starting over, the invisible weight of cultural adjustment, the quiet identity shifts that nobody around you quite understands. Combined with my background in psychology, I saw a gap I could genuinely fill.
And so, in 2009, Expat Psychologist was born — the first practice in the Netherlands dedicated exclusively to internationally mobile individuals.
Where we are today
What began as a single office in Leiden has grown into an international practice spanning the Netherlands and Switzerland, with a team of psychologists who share the same commitment: to offer high-quality, culturally informed psychological support to people living far from home.
Our clients include expats, diplomats, international students, UN and NGO professionals, and globally mobile families. Each brings their own story. Each deserves support that truly understands it.
